Deborah Kenny named Educator of the Year

New York, NY, November 7, 2006 – Village Academies Founder and CEO Dr. Deborah Kenny was honored as “Educator of the Year” at the New York Ten Awards, an annual selection of  New York leaders who display extraordinary leadership in their industry.  New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein presented the award to Kenny at Cipriani Wall Street.

In presenting the award, Chancellor Klein said, “Deborah Kenny is one of the great leaders in our nation, doing some of the most important work.  In three short years in Harlem, she is producing results that are really extraordinary.  Unlike other public schools, every year a kid is in one of her schools, that kid does better than the previous year.  I could dazzle you with the numbers.  To give you an idea of the magnitude, 96% of their 7^th graders are proficient in math; in all of New York City only 44% are proficient.  For too long our nation has made excuses for why we don’t succeed to educate kids like those she is educating at her schools up in Harlem.  We will never fix poverty in America until we fix education.  Deborah Kenny shines a beacon of hope and opportunity for all kids.  Let us never forget the success she is accomplishing.  It’s very important to the future of this nation to have people like Deborah Kenny, who believe excellence is not related to skin color, family background, poverty or anything else.  It is related to the education we provide these kids.”
