Charter schools in New York City get slightly less government funding per pupil than traditional public schools when the charter school is located in a public school building, and 18 percent less per student when the charter rents private space, according to a study released Wednesday by the city's Independent Budget Office.
The study, which was undertaken at the request of Patrick Sullivan, the Manhattan representative to the city's Panel for Educational Policy, confirmed in general terms what charter advocates have argued for years: that charter school students are allocated less city and state funds than their counterparts in traditional schools.
