Legislation gives parents power at schools

Solid legislation in Michigan:

Parents and teachers could vote to force their schools to be converted to charters; the cap on the number of charter schools allowed in the state would be eliminated, and districts could privatize teaching staffs under a package of sweeping legislative reforms introduced Wednesday.

The seven-bill package was introduced by Senate Republicans and address several proposals that Gov. Rick Snyder discussed during an education speech in April.

"This is giving choices and power to parents and students across the state to make their own decisions on what's best for their education," said state Sen. Phil Pavlov, R-St. Clair Township, who sponsored two of the bills and heads the Senate Education Committee
