KIPP is hiring

KIPP is always looking for outstanding educators to teach in -- and run -- KIPP schools across the country, plus KIPP NYC seeks people for its finance, development and operations teams.  If you know of anyone who would be interested in these positions, please forward this email to them and tell them to go to www.kipp.org.

Below are two recruiting emails from two KIPP leaders in NYC, both of whom talk about their experiences at KIPP and how much it's meant to them.

From Mandy Gauss, Director of Development & Operations, KIPP NYC:

Another shameless plug for KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program). …  WE’RE LOOKING FOR GREAT PEOPLE – school leaders to open KIPP schools around the county, close to 20 teachers to work in New York City and people to join our finance, development and operations teams!

As you know, I joined the organization six years ago when KIPP represented a middle school in Houston, TX and a second middle school in the South Bronx.  At that point, KIPP Academy  in the South Bronx was a $2 million organization with a staff of 13.  Fast forward six years – there are 47 schools across the country and 7 more scheduled to open this summer.  We’ve grown in New York City to a network of 4 schools and plan to open a KIPP NYC high school in 2007.  … And, the best part - I wake up everyday excited about the work we’re doing, inspired by the relentless pursuit of excellence I see every day in classrooms, hallways and offices, and passionate about continuing to create opportunities for our students, teachers and school leaders.  At its core, KIPP represents a big dream, the dream that anything is possible! And, anything IS possible. I see that every day and it’s amazing!

From Maggie Runyan-Shefa, Founder, KIPP STAR in Harlem:

Hello friends and family –

As many of you know, I founded a charter school in Harlem three years ago with the help and support of the KIPP Foundation. KIPP STAR College Prep Charter School is about to send its pioneer class into 8th grade when they will begin the process of high school admission. It is truly an exciting time for our students, staff, and families.

I can’t begin to tell you what the school has meant to our kids and families. I always talk about how Parent/Teacher Conference Day on the last day of school is my favorite. To see the light of pride in each parent’s eyes as they see their child’s year-long progress is truly a privilege. It is the culmination of a lot of hard work and sacrifice of the hardest-working kids, teachers, and families in our community.

I came to KIPP as a teacher and it is still the thing I love doing the most. At some point, though, because of the faith placed in me by the students in my one classroom and my mentors, when I was given the opportunity to start a school in Harlem, I realized I had a moral obligation to do it. I have seen the transformation KIPP has had in the lives of kids in many different cities across the country. Not only are our schools directly impacting the kids we serve everyday, but they are forcing schools in these communities to rethink expectations for teachers and kids.

I am writing to you because over the years you have in one way or another shared in the struggle to break the cycle of poverty that keeps our nation from being the truly great place it could be. The KIPP Foundation is actively seeking individuals to join our efforts in raising the achievement levels of low-income kids across the country.  Here are two ways you can help –

1)       KIPP is looking for new school leaders. If you or anyone in your social or professional networks is interested in starting a school, please forward the attached information about the Fisher Fellowship and the KIPP Teaching Fellowship. I am happy to speak candidly with anyone interested in either opportunity.

2)       KIPP Schools across the country are looking for excellent teachers. For more information, visit www.kipp.org for more on our schools.

Please take a couple minutes to forward this email to anyone you think might be interested. There are so many deserving kids waiting on a great school to attend in so many communities across the country and they need your help.

Thank you for your help in building a better tomorrow. Please come by our school the next time you find yourself in New York.
