NYC Public Charter Schools Continue to Outperform Districts and Citywide Average on State Reading Exam

I was too pessimistic this morning.  DESPITE having much more disadvantaged students, New York City's public charter schools outperformed the city's traditional public schools by modest amount -- and by a far greater amount when they're compared to their district averages which, as I noted in my email earlier today, is a better, though not ideal, comparison.  (Thanks to the New York City Center for Charter School Excellence for this data.)

NYC Public Charter Schools Continue to Outperform Districts and Citywide Average on State Reading Exam

The first set of test results pursuant to federal No Child Left Behind mandates show New York City's public charter schools continuing a positive trend of outperforming their community district counterparts, and the citywide average, based on a preliminary analysis of the 2005-06 State English Language Arts exam.

Overall, 55 percent of the city's 3-8 public charter school students are meeting or exceeding grade standards for reading compared to 50 percent of the city's traditional public school students.

When compared to their community school district counterparts, however, the performance of the city's public charter schools on the ELA exam comes into sharper focus. For example, 26 of 35 NYC public charter schools -- or 80 percent -- outperformed their community district counterparts.  On average, public charters schools scored eight percentage points above the districts in which they are located.

NOTE: Test data for three charter schools -- Brooklyn Charter School, Harbor Sciences and Arts Charter School, and Merrick Academy Charter School were not released by the State Department of Education. The total percentage of schools passing may change once this data becomes available. The Charter Center will post all test data for NYC public charter schools on its Web site next week.

We commend the hard work on the part of all public charter school teachers.
