Amistad inspires new charter school
Amistad Academy, a highly touted charter school in New Haven with a record of boosting urban students' achievement, would be duplicated in Bridgeport next fall, under a plan winning support from state and local officials...In addition, Bridgeport's schools would receive a $1 million grant from the Charter Oak Challenge Foundation, filtered through the Bridgeport Public Education Fund.
The contribution would be earmarked for teacher training, with no more than half to be used in the first year, said Andy Boas, foundation president.
Boas said the foundation intends to support a charter school that has a successful track record.
"It's important for kids in Bridgeport to have another good school," he said.
In addition to supplying the grant to Bridgeport, the foundation will also raise funds to help renovate Waltersville for the charter school.
