A Washington-based advocacy group is launching an advertising campaign today that accuses the Newark Teachers Union of protecting bad teachers, discouraging good educators from coming to the city's school system and failing children.

The Center for Union Facts is sponsoring billboards, newspaper ads, and bus signs promoting the message, which is detailed on it's website. The group, which in the past has targeted organized labor, has been characterized as anti-union.

Newark's questionable graduation rate and poor test scores make it a good example of how teachers unions across the country aren't in the best interest of students, said Richard Berman, the group's executive director.

"If someone is making bad cars you can buy another car," he said. "There are great teachers, but the bad ones are protected by unions who are turning out scrap metal."
