Two years after Hurricane Katrina struck, the challenges of providing public education in New Orleans remain daunting. As part of our recently launched special series on public education in New Orleans <BLOCKED::http://enews.edweek.org/GoNow/a15864a169965a387543994a2> ,  Education Week and edweek.org will track the progress and setbacks in the city over the coming school year.

In this online chat, Paul G. Pastorek, a New Orleans native and  longtime lawyer who was appointed as Louisiana's state schools chief in March, and Paul G. Vallas, a veteran urban superintendent hired by Mr. Pastorek in May to run the city's Recovery School District, will take your questions on the recovery of the city's schools two years after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the resulting floods.

Both leaders and their staff members are working to repair damaged school  buildings, erect modular campuses, and hire principals and faculty members for  the more than 30 new schools that will open Sept. 4 in New Orleans. Already,  dozens of charter schools, and a handful of high-performing campuses that are still controlled by the Orleans Parish School Board, have opened. But it's the performance of the Recovery School District that remains most central to  rebuilding public education in New Orleans and to the city's larger recovery  from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
