Gov. Schwarzenegger Issues Statement on Assembly Committee's Failure to Pass SBX5 1

Here's Gov. Schwarzenegger's press release about this:

What They're Saying …

… About The Assembly's Failure To Pass SBX5 1

On Wednesday, December 9, 2009, the Assembly Education Committee killed SBX5 1, bipartisan legislation introduced by the Governor and Senator Gloria Romero to make California highly competitive for up to $700 million in President Obama's Race to the Top education reform and funding competition. The Assembly instead passed ABX5 8 by Assemblymember Julia Brownley, a watered-down version that strangles parental empowerment and ties the hands of charter schools. Here is what newspapers, legislators, school and parent groups and others are saying:

"If You're Committed To Real Change In The Way You Educate Your Kids; If You're Willing To Hold Yourselves More Accountable; If You Develop A Strong Plan To Improve The Quality Of Education In Your State, We'll Offer You A Grant To Help Make That Plan A Reality." – President Barack Obama (Amanda Paulson, "Schools Sprinting To Win Obama's Race To The Top Billions," Christian Science Monitor, 11/4/09)

San Jose Mercury News: "The State Assembly Failed California's Schoolchildren." The state Assembly failed California's schoolchildren Wednesday. The 17-member Assembly education committee reviewed two bills … when it was time to vote on the second, by Democratic Sen. Gloria Romero … [it] failed. The result was a dramatic illustration of the larger battle over education reform. It pits the meek, incremental approach taken by the Brownley bill — which has been watered down to please teachers' unions and others who put their own interests first — with the innovative, ambitious effort Romero and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger support. (Editorial, "Legislature Must Adopt More Aggressive Approach To Reform," San Jose Mercury News, 12/10/09)
