Guest Teacher at Frederick Douglass Academy

Jane Viau, the rock star AP Statistics and Microeconomics teacher (see http://edreform.blogspot.com/2010/01/trading-portfolios-for-lesson-plans.html) at the Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem (7th avenue and 149th street), invited me to be a guest teacher for two three-hour classes, which I taught in mid-January and again last week.  It was my first time teaching young people (I've done a TON of teaching of adults) and had a blast, giving them an overview of the financial industry, teaching them the difference between debt and equity, what stocks are, how businesses are financed, what value investing is, and how to understand and analyze an income statement.  What an incredible group of students – so interested, curious and engaged – and even though they were on vacation last week, the ENTIRE class showed up!   (some pictures Jane took are posted at: http://picasaweb.google.com/WTilson/FDA).
