They damned the kids: Teachers' union and its lackeys sank bid for federal funds

The NY Daily News editorial correctly blasts the main culprits for NY's dismal showing:

The state Legislature and New York teachers unions have joined to subject the city's 1 million public school students - and peers around the state - to gross educational malpractice.

At the same time, they have walloped the taxpayers to the tune of as much as $700 million by, in defiant stupidity, spurning a bonanza of federal school aid.

The main agents of this destruction were Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Senate Democratic Conference chief John Sampson and United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew - all of whom stood athwart history by refusing to give school districts the power to fire demonstrably bad instructors.
