Gobi got me
An update from a true warrior, Michael Dee:
Well the Gobi got me. In heat that exceeded 120f and at the 125 mile mark I hit the wall. Within 90 seconds I went from a good pace to complete the 65 mile stage in under 22 hours to laying on the ground getting sick as a dog. Despite my best efforts at hydration and nutrition the extreme heat and effort caused my blood sugar to collapse to a very low level (my pulse fell to 40) to the point I couldn't stand up. Eventually some food got me stabilized and I continued on. However the next food stage was over 6 hours away through the sand dunes in a remote area in the dark and I made the call that safety had to intervene as the ability to get medical help in that situation is far from immediate. In the end I made it close to 200km/130mi over 5 days.
"While this was the most extreme and difficult physical effort I have ever attempted I would do it again in a minute to help the KIPP program. KIPPsters know that it's the effort that counts and success is born of many small setbacks."
I appreciate everyone's support for this initiative and for KIPP.
Man, does he make me (sitting around, enjoying the weekend) feel like a slug! You can support Michael at: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=JVSZZHCTPWB5N
