Why Bad Teachers Survive

Speaking of the impossibility of firing ANY teacher, the Chicago Tribune just published a graphic showing the 2-5 year, 27-step process to fire an ineffective but tenured teacher in Illinois (Reason Magazine had a similar graphic for NYC – posted at: http://reason.com/assets/db/12639308918768.pdf).  Nobody is saying teachers should be subject to being fired at the whim of any principal, but the pendulum has swung WAAAAAAAY to far to protecting the small number (much larger number in inner-city schools – see my recent Huffington Post article) of terrible teachers at the expense of kids who suffer under them
