Event with Amy Chua, the Tiger Mom

I enjoyed the event with Amy Chua, the Tiger Mom, on Sunday night.  She said the first 2/3 of the book was tongue-in-cheek, almost farcical.

Her best story was about the translation of her book into Chinese, where it's been a best seller.  The title was something like: "Yale Law School Professor's Parenting Tips" – they're taking her seriously!  When she went to China, she said the typical questions were from moms asking whether they should make their kids practice piano or violin 7 hours a day, or whether 6 was enough, and asking for her advice on how to get their kids into top-tier U.S. universities.  Chua's advice: MORE play dates and sleepovers.  She said she thinks U.S. kids do too much of this, but the Chinese have gone crazy in the other directions, where young kids are pressured to work hard from 7am to 10pm every day.
