A story from Trenton

In response to my email about Newark's public schools, one of my friends told me this story about trying to run a school in Trenton:

I’m a founding board member of the Village Charter School, K-8, in Trenton.   It's a gritty business.  VCS suspended a boy two weeks ago because he brought brass knuckles to school to give to a girl "so she could defend herself."  The boy's mother came in to explain that the brass knuckles were hers.  She bought them two years ago for self-defense after some "Bloods" attacked her and her son on the sidewalk and held her son and made him watch while they beat his mom senseless.  It's a different world than Bucks County and the cable television business...
