George Miller

I met Congressman George Miller this morning, a Democrat who's been in Congress since 1975, representing the East Bay in California (here's his bio: http://www.house.gov/georgemiller/bio.html).  He's been a LION in support of genuine school reform, putting him (sadly) totally at odds with most of his party (here's the section on his web site on education: http://www.house.gov/georgemiller/education.html).

He was one of only four Democrats in the House to vote in favor of the DC voucher bill and he, Ted Kennedy and Geroge Bush cooperated (imagine THAT!) to get No Child Left Behind passed.  He's very concerned -- with good reason -- that with NCLB up for renewal next year, all of the groups that are threatened by the standards and rigor of NCLB (governors, teacher unions, etc.) will conspire to kill it or seriously water it down.  He agrees that it needs fixing, but not at the expense of continuing to create accountability, especially in the way it shines a bright light on how schools are failing disadvantaged children.

WHY CAN'T MORE DEMOCRATS BE LIKE THIS?!?!!?!?
