| Dear Friend of DFER: I'd like to invite you to a fundraising reception honoring Rep. James Clyburn (D-South Carolina,) who as majority whip, is the highest-ranking African-American in the House of Representatives.
As someone who rose from humble roots (his father was a fundamentalist minister, his mother a beautician) to assume a leadership position in Congress, Rep. Clyburn understands better than most the impact that a quality education can have on a child's ability to achieve the American Dream. He also understands, clearly, that far too many of our nation's children are not receiving the kind of education they will need to survive and thrive in a rapidly-changing world.
The event is being sponsored by Democrats for Education Reform and the Council of Urban Professionals. We'd like to display how much enthusiasm there is in our respective organizations for fundamental and productive changes to our education systems.
This is a chance for one of the nation's top Democrats to hear what matters to real people, rather than what matters merely to lobbyists and special interests. We hope you will be able to join us in making a strong statement about the Democratic Party and education reform at this exciting event. The evening will begin with remarks by Dr. Howard Fuller, former superintendent of the Milwaukee Public Schools.
Please forward this invitation to anyone who might be interested. When: Monday, Nov. 19 Time: 6 p.m. Where: The home of Boykin and Celerie Curry, 106 Central Park South, Apt. 27A, Manhattan. Contribution Levels: Sponsor, $5,000; Guest, $500. (Checks should be made out to "Bridge PAC," the Whip's political action committee.) Rsvp to: http://www.dfer.org/events/clyburn Thanks and hope to see you on the 19th!
