Shavar Jeffries wins in Newark

BIG news from Newark – Shavar Jeffries (who was on the panel at my premiere two weeks ago; see: http://picasaweb.google.com/WTilson/NYPremiere) and his team swept the three Newark school board seats on Tuesday.  This is a big step forward in reforming one of the worst school systems in America, and further positions Shavar to succeed Cory Booker as mayor of Newark someday:

Civil rights lawyer Shavar Jeffries was the top vote getter in the Newark Public Schools Advisory Board election Tuesday in a competitive race that drew nearly 8 percent of the city's registered voters.

Jeffries and his runningmates on the For Our Kids team, Ivan Lamourt and Shanique Speight, bested a field of eight candidates, including three candidates running under the Children First banner.
