A 'Success' story Harlem charter outperforming rivals

The Post with a well-deserved shout-out for Eva Moskowitz and her Success Charter Network (and it's not surprising to see the UFT's charter school among the worst in NYC…):

The plunging scores on state tests released last week were a black eye for the city's public schools -- but provided "vindication" for a charter-schools crusader.

Five years ago, the United Federation of Teachers used its political clout to help ensure that Eva Moskowitz, a former city councilwoman, lost a bid for Manhattan borough president.

This was after Moskowitz put teachers' contracts under critical public scrutiny while chairing the Education Committee.

Moskowitz needed something to do, so in 2006 she opened Harlem Success Academy Charter School. Not bound by union rules, she enforced tougher standards for her teachers, offering better salaries but quickly weeding out those who didn't meet her expectations.

New data show that 95 percent of the school's students who took the 2010 state math test passed and 88 percent passed in reading -- both tops among charter schools.

In fact, its fourth-graders outperformed all charter-school counterparts statewide, and the 650-student school did even better than traditional schools on the affluent Upper East and West sides.

In comparison, students at the UFT Charter School in Brooklyn tied for the fifth-worst charter in the city this year. Only 34 percent passed math and 28 percent passed reading.
