Educators for Fenty

Here's an email from Dustin Thomas, founder of Educators for Fenty (mrthomaschs@gmail.com):

Hey there,

First of all, thanks for coming out to Educators for Fenty events. They've been great so far, and thanks to our volunteers who have talked to hundreds of people about the importance of education reform.

Now, it's crunch time. In less than twelve days, D.C. voters will decide whether Michelle Rhee keeps her job for four more years.

We were on the phone with the campaign on Tuesday night, and they outlined their path to victory. I'm sure a lot of you have seen that we're down in the polls right now, but the truth is that in primary elections like this one, most people don't vote unless a campaign gets them to the polls. If we can put together a massive Get-Out-the-Vote Operation, we'll win.

The campaign has looked at the number of volunteer-hours it's going to take to win this race and keep school reform safe, and they've come up with the number: 1260. Put simply,
if volunteers devote 1260 hours, total, to this campaign, we've got a good chance to win. If not, we're going to lose.

In order to meet that goal, the campaign needs Educators For Fenty to provide 25 volunteers a day for three days: this Saturday,Sept. 4, this Monday, Sept. 6, and next Saturday, Sept. 11. We're going to be talking to likely Fenty supporters and encouraging them to vote early.
I know it's a lot to ask, giving up a full day to volunteer, but it's the only way we're going to win - it's the only way we can ensure D.C. will continue to put kids first.

I think it's fair to say that the campaign has put this election in our hands. What a challenge!

For some, this challenge may seem to be out of reach or insurmountable.  However, I am certain that each of you in this group has had to, on countless occasions, overcome far greater adversity to bring the highest level of service to your kids.  This is the time to demonstrate to the voters in D.C. the length that educators will go to provide the best for our students.

As a next step, please reply to this email and let me know which days you can volunteer. Also let me know if you have any questions or suggestions - this group belongs to all of us, and we want to make sure it keeps getting better and more effective.

Thanks again for going the extra mile,

Dustin Thomas
