Mott Haven has come long way, but school system still broken, says writer Jonathan Kozol
Speaking of union lackeys with no serious ideas for fixing the system, Jonathan Kozol has unfortunately resurfaced in this NY Daily News interview where he repeats the tired, discredited assertions that charter schools increase segregation and that KIPP creams (it's been a while since I've gone after Kozol – to see why I think he's "a liar, menace and a crackpot", see: http://edreform.blogspot.com/2008/02/learning-disabled-education-expert.html):
DN: What's your stance on charter schools?
KOZOL: It's easy to create a hundred islands of short-term salvation for children of knowledgeable families - those parents that knew how to get their kids into charter school lotteries for the few spaces available. But the hard thing is educating all the children in the neighborhood.
When I visited KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) Academy in the Bronx, they put on quite a nice show, but I never knew a South Bronx school with so many students with nice prescription glasses and nice Lands End backpacks.
Charter schools - in the long run - are not a good transformation of our public system since they maintain this segregation.
