Shael Polakow-Suransky is taking on the No. 2 role in the nation's largest school system less than a year after his wife died of cancer.

Stunning actress Brienin Bryant was just 37 when she passed away following a long battle with breast cancer.

"It feels like a hole has been ripped in the world," Polakow-Suransky wrote on his Facebook page on Christmas Eve last year, the day after Bryant's death.

"Never having lost someone close to me I had no idea what it would be. The hardest part is not being able to continue the conversation," he wrote.

Like Polakow-Suransky, Bryant graduated from Brown University in 1994.

Her 15-year professional acting career was full of highlights, including performances at the New York Shakespeare Festival, Yale Repertory Theatre, the Public Theater, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and many others.

She starred in episodes of "Oz," "Law and Order" and "Third Watch" and in last year's film "Cold Souls."

A month after her death, Polakow-Suransky posted a moving tribute to his wife on Facebook - heartbreaking footage of a tearful Bryant reciting the end of "Uncle Vanya" by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov on Thanksgiving, less than a month before her death.

"She saw the speech as a hopeful affirmation of life," Polakow-Suransky wrote. "It was her way of saying goodbye to those she loved."
