David Einhorn, the hedge-fund honcho hoping to save the struggling Mets, is also making a big pitch for city education reform.

Einhorn — the Amazins' new minority owner — is a major financial backer of the city's growing charter-school movement.

Over the past five years, the investment guru has pumped $750,000 into Democrats for Education Reform and other groups that promote charters.

"If he can do for the Mets what he's done for DFER, New York will have two serious baseball teams again," said DFER director Joe Williams.

Einhorn heads the Greenlight Capital hedge fund, which manages $7.8 billion in assets.

John Petry, a founder of Success Charter Network, praised Einhorn as a pioneer.

"David's been one of the most thoughtful funders in all of educational philanthropy. He's been willing to help scale up ideas that work and also get behind some of the most important new ideas in their early days," Petry said.
