Poems from Maya Angelou Academy

From David Domenici:

I know you focus a lot in your emails on policy-related matters (I'm glad).

Also know you like simple good news from the field. So, if you have 10 minutes...below are two links. The first takes you to an audio recording of a selection of poems written by young men at the Maya Angelou Academy this year (Maya Angelou Academy is the school in DC's youth correctional facility--I was the principal of the school from July 2007 until just last week). The poems are read by our summer interns who worked with us through our long-standing partnership with the Children's Defense Fund and its Freedom School program.  The second link takes you to Within These Gates, an on-line publication that includes poetry and art written and crafted by our young men this year.

I hope you will take a few minutes to listen to some of the poetry by clicking on the audio link and then spend some time browsing the journal, as well.  I think this is a really spectacular collection.  Please pass along to friends and colleagues.
