Steps needed to correct deftness deficit at the CTU

A Chicago Tribune columnist calls for Karen Lewis to resign:

Karen Lewis should step down as president of the Chicago Teachers Union.

…In the months ahead — as the teachers negotiate their next contract during very tight economic times — the union cannot afford to appear stubborn, churlish and supercilious.

It needs someone at the helm who has all of Karen Lewis' passion for public education but also the gift for sharing and advancing that passion in a deft fashion that benefits teachers as well as students in the long run.

Lewis will not step down as union president. Mere critics cannot diminish her belief in herself.

Maybe, though, she can step up: drop the attitude and the adjectives, lay out specific proposals backed with facts and keep the focus on the students where the public feels it belongs.
