The Perkins show trial

The NY Post editorial echoed the Daily News:

State Sen. Bill Perkins' loaded-dice lambasting of charter schools proceeded in predictable kangaroo- court style yesterday -- not to insult marsupials or anything -- and now the question is: What next?

The tone was set early on, with the Harlem pol admitting charter-bashers to the Downtown hearing chamber long before the charade was set to begin -- even as he relegated reformists to the street.

And then Perkins took things downhill.

The NY Post editorial ended with these lines:

Lawmakers who work openly and notoriously against the best interests of their constituents -- Exhibit A: Bill Perkins -- have no legitimate place in public life.

He needs to go.

Time to primary Perkins.

The Post continued with this article, looking at how vulnerable Perkins is to a primary challenge (mark my words, his days of throwing the children of his constituents under the bus are limited):

Is Bill Perkins starting to hear footsteps? At his marathon anti-charter-school hearing yesterday, the Harlem state senator showed a surprisingly thin skin about his political future -- grilling SUNY officials about reports that a charter operator they'd licensed was looking to back a challenge for his seat this fall.

"Is it corrupt for a charter school to be involved in politics?" he intoned. (Of course, he could ask the same question about his allies, the teachers unions -- were he so inclined.)

A challenger would have fertile territory. Perkins' War on Charters can't be broadly popular in his district, where the charter movement has blossomed -- and where demand for seats outstrips supply by thousands of students every year.

Perkins might also lack the energetic support of broad swaths of the Harlem political establishment, which he's antagonized on numerous occasions.

…Harlemites new and old may well decide it's time for a fresh face.

If so, Perkins is in trouble.
